How to compare the real cost of external engineers.

Two proposals can show the same hourly rate and still describe very different arrangements. A useful comparison starts with the person, the billable time and the work each party will handle.

Make sure the roles are comparable

Check the experience, technical depth and level of ownership expected. “Senior” can cover different responsibilities. Discuss the work, the decisions the person should make and how their experience will be assessed.

Then compare the candidate and role against those requirements, rather than treating the label as a fixed specification.

Ask what is inside the rate

Look for a clear explanation of compensation, the provider's fee and included services. Check recruitment, administration, local support, equipment and any workspace.

If something is optional, understand the price and when you would need it. A clear proposal makes those items easy to identify.

Understand what you will be billed for

An hourly figure may be based on actual worked hours, a monthly allocation or a wider compensation arrangement. Ask how holidays, sickness, overtime and partial months are treated.

Compare proposals using the same period and working-time assumptions. Multiplying every rate by an arbitrary monthly hour count can hide meaningful differences.

Include your internal effort

You will still need to interview candidates, direct the technical work and provide onboarding and management time. Include that effort in the comparison so the arrangement is judged as a whole.

Check the terms that affect flexibility

Notice periods, compensation reviews, replacement arrangements and transfer terms affect flexibility and cost. Understand them before a change becomes urgent.

If you may want to move people into your own structure later, discuss that early and document the relevant conditions.

Use a comparison you can defend

Put the same role, period, billable-time assumptions and services next to each other. List exclusions separately. Mark estimates as estimates.

Talentbyte shows contractor compensation, a fixed service fee and agreed optional costs in the proposal. We can help you work through the comparison using your requirements and budget.
